You wouldn’t believe what someone said to me at the post office today!
“How would you know how to help an older woman struggling with her fat, aging body when you’re so slim and fit?”
Well… let me tell you.
Whether we grew up too thin or carrying extra weight, most of us spent years wrestling with acceptance — from others, and even more so, from ourselves. We all looked in the mirror at some point and wished we saw something different.
And today, my body — like nearly every woman’s body over 60 or 65 — has changed dramatically. I haven’t gained weight, but I have absolutely changed shape. I’ve gone up in pant sizes. Gravity is doing it’s thing!
But here’s the beautiful part:
As I’ve learned to love myself and embrace what is, life has become more joyful, not less.
Yes, I have aches and pains (don’t we all?), but instead of discouraging me, they motivate me to care for myself in ways I simply wasn’t committed to earlier in life.
We all deserve kindness. We deserve to offer ourselves the same warmth and compassion we’d naturally give a dear friend. Yet so many of us still slip into self-criticism, judgment, and harshness.
Tell me — has beating yourself up ever inspired you to take better care of your body, your spirit, your life?
It never has for me.
Understanding, gentleness, and the reminder that we are not alone — that is what lays the foundation for self-love, self-soothing, and truly caring for ourselves in this season of life.
Try kindness with yourself today.
You might be surprised at how good it feels.
You might even like it.
